Andrea B.
Blum, A.G. (2014) Gazania rigens (L.) Gaertn. (Asteraceae) Gazania. Flowers photographed in ultraviolet and visible light. http://www.ultraviol...rigens-gazania/ Synonyms:Treasure FlowerOrthonna rigens L.Gorteria rigens L.Gazania splendens hort. ex Hend. & A. A. Hend.Comment:Gazania rigens is native to South Africa. The cheerful Gazanias developed for commercial sale in plant nursuries feature a variety of colours and patterns. Interestingly, in Ultraviolet light the flowers also have a variety of UV signatures and false colours. Reference:1. Missouri Botanical Garden (2014) Gazania rigens http://www.missourib...kempercode=a517 Set 1Middletown, New Jersey, USA17 June 2010Cultivar in home garden Equipment [Nikon D700-broadband + Novoflex 35mm f/3.5 Noflexar] Visible Light [f/8 for 1/500" @ ISO 800 in Sunlight with Baader UVIR-Block Filter] Ultraviolet Light [f/8 for 1.3" @ ISO 800 in Sunlight with Baader UV-Pass Filter]Note that some flowers have a UV-dark central bullseye with a brighter inner ring around the disk. These bullseye flowers have brighter ray tips which vary in false colour - white, blue or yellow. One flower has UV-dark rays with a bright edge (on the left).Another flower has almost wholly UV-dark rays with false yellow tips on some petals (in the back).See Set5 and Set 6 in the following posts for a Gazania having UV-striped rays. Ultraviolet Light [Alternate false colour rendition of preceding photo] Infrared Light [f/8 for 1/320" @ ISO 800 in Sunlight with B+W 092 IR-Pass Filter]Gazania rigens is one of the very few flowers which shows some patterning in Infrared light. The proximal end of each ray has an IR-dark patch. Together these patches form an IR-dark ring around the disk. The IR-dark area seems to match the visible brown ring around the disk. Infrared Light [Alternate false colour rendition and different crop of preceding photo] Set 2Middletown, New Jersey, USA21 June 2010Cultivar in home garden After seeing the interesting IR-dark patches in Set 1 made using the B+W 092 IR-pass filterwhich leaks some visible red light before its cut-in at 720nm,I gathered some petals from my Gazanias for a closer look to see whetherthe IR-dark patches were still visible under a stronger B+W 093 IR-pass filterwhich passes IR only. Equipment [Nikon D700-broadband + Carl Zeiss 60mm f/4.0 UV-Planar] Visible Light [f/11 for 1/60" @ ISO 800 with onboard Flash and Baader UVIR-Block Filter] Infrared Light [f/11 for 1/30" @ ISO 800 with onboard Flash and B+W 092 IR-Pass Filter]Both sets of rays show the IR-dark patches in the mixed Red + IR light. Infrared Light [f/11 for 1/10" @ ISO 800 with onboard Flash and B+W 093 IR-Pass Filter]The rays on the left from the yellow Gazania show the IR-dark patches in IR-only light. The rays on the right from the white Gazania may have the faintest shadow of these patches, but it is not at all obvious. Set 3Middletown, New Jersey, USA22 June 2010Cultivar in home garden Equipment [Nikon D700-broadband + Carl Zeiss 60mm f/4.0 UV-Planar] Visible Light [f/11 for 1/640" @ ISO 400 in Sunlight with Baader UVIR-Block Filter] Ultraviolet Light [f/11 for 2.5" @ ISO 400 in Sunlight with Baader UV-Pass Filter]A light leak through the viewfinder has brightened the corners of this photo. Infrared Light [f/11 for 1/250" @ ISO 400 in Sunlight with B+W 092 IR-Pass Filter] Infrared Light [f/11 for 1/40" @ ISO 400 in Sunlight with B+W 093 IR-Pass Filter] Link to comment

Set 4Middletown, New Jersey, USA10 October 2010 Equipment [Nikon D700-broadband + Novoflex 35mm f/3.5 Noflexar] Visible Light [f/8 for 1/13" @ ISO 400 in Sunlight with Baader UVIR-Block Filter] Ultraviolet Light [f/8 for 4" @ ISO 1600 in Sunlight with Nichia 365 UV-Led]The narrowband Nichia 365 UV-Led produces a different false colour appearanceas compared to UV photos made in sunlight or with a UV flash. However, the central bullseye is apparent in this particular Gazania. Ultraviolet Light [f/8 for 1.3" @ ISO 1600 in Sunlight with Nichia 385 UV-Led]Similar remarks hold for the Nichia 385 UV-Led. Damon
Well done. That new day mix is stunning. That whole first group shot is awesome. I need to get a hold of some more of these. So fun to shoot.I think I am going to flat press one of mine and let it dry & die for a bit and see if the signature remains. I have a feeling it will still be there but I want to confirm it.Have you ever tried bringing them inside for the winter? -D Link to comment
